Kansas hosted the Governor’s Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration on Thursday with a ceremonial march from the Kansas Judicial Center to the Kansas Capitol. Kyron Cox of Wichita, Kansas State Conference Youth & College President of the NAACP delivered the keynote.
“Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a freedom fighter and a fighter for freedom for the civil rights of all people,” said Kyron Cox.
Kansas Governor Sam Brownback welcomed participants and proclaimed Monday, January 21st as “ Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.”.
“Dr. King often talked about the blessed community, but we cannot get to the blessed community without reconciling our differences with one another,” Governor Brownback said. “Reconciliation was one of the greatest gifts we can give to ourselves.”
The annual celebration also featured Kansas State Senator David Haley Ross/Eisenhower Signature School of Topeka; Essence Allen of Wichita; Topeka Highland Park ROTC; Topeka High School Drumline and Dr. Tony Stanley of Harvest Church West Branch.
