Kansas Flag Honors

The State of Kansas’ Flag Honors program pays tribute to the service of Kansas military personnel who are killed in the line of duty, and ensures flag etiquette is consistent throughout the state.

The State of Kansas Flag Honors program, implemented through Executive Order, allows for the flag of the United States to be displayed at half-staff throughout the State of Kansas when a member of the Kansas National Guard is killed in the line of duty; a member of the Kansas Air National Guard is killed in the line of duty; or a Kansas resident serving as a member of the United States Armed Forces is killed in the line of duty. In each instance, the date the flag would fly at half-staff will be designated by the Governor.

Governor Orders Flags Lowered on Friday, August 19th, in Honor of CW2 Bryan Nichols

Topeka – Kansas Governor Sam Brownback has ordered flags in the State of Kansas to be flown at half-staff on Friday, August 19th, in honor of Chief Warrant Officer 2 Bryan Nichols who died on August 6, 2011, while serving in the U.S. Army in Afghanistan.

“On behalf of a grateful state and a grateful nation, I want to thank and honor CW2 Nichols for his brave sacrifice,” Gov. Brownback said. “Kansas lost one of its heroes in Bryan Nichols. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends in this difficult time. His sacrifice will not be forgotten.”

CW2 Nichols, of Hays, was killed in action in Wardak Province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The 31 year old was one of 30 brave Americans killed when their Chinook helicopter crashed after taking enemy fire.

CW2 Nichols was assigned to the 7^th Battalion, 158^th Aviation Regiment, U.S. Army Reserve, New Century AirCenter ,Olathe, Kansas. Nichols’ wife and son live in Kansas City and his parents live in Palco.

The funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 19^that the Al Billinger Fieldhouse on the Thomas More Prep Marian High Campus - with burial in Pleasantview Cemetery near Palco.. Contributions to Nichols Memorial may be made at http://www.bnicholsmemorial.bbnow.org/index.php.

Yesterday, Governor Brownback ordered the flags to fly at half-staff on Thursday, August 18th, in honor of SPC Spencer Duncan who also was killed in action on August 6^th.
