03.16.10 : Governor Parkinson names Chris Biggs Kansas’ Secretary of State

Citing his experience, professionalism and dedication, Governor Mark Parkinson today named Chris Biggs as Kansas’ Secretary of State.

“Chris has been in public service for more than twenty years, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to our state, our citizens and our future,” Parkinson said. “Chris will bring his forward-looking vision to the Office of Secretary of State while increasing the efficiency and participation in Kansas’ elections.”

 

03.12.10 : Governor Parkinson enacts statewide public smoking ban

To advance the fight against cancer and improve the overall health of all Kansans, Governor Mark Parkinson signed into law HB 2221, the Kansas Clean Indoor Air today. Joined by First Lady Stacy Parkinson, former-Senator David Wysong, Secretary of Health and Environment Roderick Bremby, state legislators and health advocacy organizations, the governor held the signing in the South Wing of the Statehouse.

“The journey of passing a statewide public smoking ban has been long and hard, but today we are able to cross the finish line knowing that we have built a better future for generations to come,” said Parkinson. “With this legislation, our state takes the necessary steps to save Kansas lives by reducing cancer, tobacco-related diseases and teen smoking. I appreciate the vision of former-Senator Wysong, the bipartisan collaboration in the legislature and the continuous support of so many Kansans.”

 

03.10.10: Governor Parkinson signs ban on K-2

Governor Mark Parkinson signed HB 2411, a ban on certain chemicals that are used to create synthetic cannabinoids, into law today bringing the total number of bills signed during the 2010 legislative session to seven.

“This legislation has received overwhelming support by Kansas law enforcement and the legislature,” said Parkinson. “It will help improve our communities by better equipping law enforcement officers in addressing this issue and deterring Kansans from drug use.”

 

03.09.10 : Governor’s appointees recommended for confirmation

To protect Kansas consumers, Governor Mark Parkinson appointed James Needham to the State Banking Board and reappointed John Smith as administrator of the Kansas Department of Credit Unions. Both appointees have been approved by the Kansas Senate Banking Committee and are awaiting confirmation by the full Senate.

“As we continue to recover from these difficult economic times, we must ensure that the integrity of our state’s financial institutions remains strong for the well-being of all Kansans,” said Parkinson. “I appreciate James and John bringing their extensive leadership and experience to these boards, and the Senate’s recognition of their qualifications.”
