Governor signs bill promoting nutrition in schools

As part of efforts to build a healthy Kansas, Governor Kathleen Sebelius today signed a bill to promote good nutrition in Kansas schools.  The bill, SB 154, directs the State Board of Education to develop guidelines for what kinds of food and beverages are available during the school day.

“If we’re going to create a healthy Kansas, we have to start by eating healthier.  Our eating habits are developed when we’re children, so it only makes sense to encourage our kids to eat better.  Eating better at school will help kids live healthier, happier lives,” Governor Sebelius said.

SB 154 directs the State Board of Education to develop nutritional guidelines for all foods and beverages made available to public school students during the school day. In developing the guidelines, the Board would be directed to consult with other state agencies, private foundations, and other entities and to give attention to the provision of healthful foods and beverages, physical activities, and wellness education directed toward the prevention and reduction of childhood obesity. When establishing the wellness policy of the school district, the local board of education would be directed to take into consideration the guidelines developed by the State Board of Education.
