29 September 2005 Governor promotes safe and drug-free schools Ensuring the safety of children is one of the top responsibilities of government, Governor Kathleen Sebelius said today as she awarded more than $750,000 to help keep schools safe and drug-free. “Kids can’t learn if they don’t feel safe. They also can’t learn if they are abusing drugs or alcohol. We have a responsibility to make sure our schools are safe and free of drugs. And we want to help parents and communities be involved in kids’ education,” Governor Sebelius said. Through the Governor’s discretionary portion of the Federal Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act grant program, 16 schools and community projects received a total of $753,924. These efforts are designed to prevent violence in and around schools; prevent illegal use of alcohol, tobacco and drugs; and involve parents and communities in their efforts. Funding is provided by the U.S. Department of Education. Recipients of the Governor’s discretionary portion of the Federal Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities Act grant program
