The Kansas Book Festival donated 500 books to Toys for Tots for its annual toy drive on Thursday during a presentation at Cedar Crest. Kansas First Lady Mary Brownback presented the books to U.S. Marine Staff Sergeant William Schneider and Gunnery Sergeant Max Coons of the General Support Ammunition Platoon, located in Topeka.
“Reading is important for kids of all ages in Kansas,” said First Lady, Mary Brownback. “We hope this donation will bring the joy and excitement of reading and Christmas to needy children in Kansas. Reading opens the door to give kids a life-long love for learning and gives children opportunities they would not otherwise have.”
The donation included 22 different titles for reading levels Kindergarten to 7th grade. The books were a donation from the Scholastic publishing company to the First Lady for her distribution.
“The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation aims to help children who are less fortunate throughout the United States experience the joy of Christmas,” said U.S. Marine Staff Sargent William Schneider. “I would urge everyone to show their support for those in need by making a contribution with your family or business.”
Toys for Tots collects new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distributes those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in several Kansas communities.
Beginning this Friday, December 7th through December 9th, the Marines will be out in full force with one of their 7-ton trucks at Wal-Mart on Wannamaker Road in Topeka accepting donations in an effort to fill that truck with toys. Donation drop-offs are set up across Kansas, for information on making a donation in your area visit www.toysfortots.org
